What it is

Realigning the jaws to restore function and facial balance

Orthognathic surgery repositions the upper jaw (maxilla), the lower jaw (mandible) or both, so the teeth meet correctly and the face is in proportion. It is performed when braces alone cannot fix how the jaws fit together.

Because the work is planned in advance and carried out from inside the mouth, results are predictable and there are no visible scars on the face. Most patients combine the surgery with orthodontic treatment before and after.

What orthognathic surgery corrects

If braces have reached their limit, or your jaws simply don't fit together, surgery addresses the cause — not just the teeth.

Underbite (Class III)

The lower jaw sits ahead of the upper jaw, so the lower teeth close in front of the upper teeth.

Overbite & overjet (Class II)

The upper jaw or teeth project well beyond the lower jaw, often with a recessed chin.

Open bite

Front teeth don't touch when the back teeth are closed, making biting and speech difficult.

Facial asymmetry

One side of the jaw is longer or set differently, shifting the chin and midline off-center.

Gummy smile

Will jaw surgery change how my face looks?
Yes — usually toward better balance. The main goal is functional (how your jaws and teeth meet), and improved facial harmony follows from putting the jaws in the right position. The degree of change depends on how far the jaws move, and it is discussed and planned with you beforehand.
Is the surgery painful, and are there visible scars?
The operation is done under general anesthesia, so you feel nothing during it. Afterward there is swelling and tightness rather than sharp pain, and it is managed with medication. Because the work is done from inside the mouth, there are no scars on your face.
How long is recovery?
Most of the visible swelling settles within about two weeks, and many people return to desk work in two to three weeks. Bone heals over the following weeks, with normal eating reintroduced gradually. Your exact timeline depends on the procedure and is explained in your plan.
Do I need braces as well?
Often, yes. Orthodontics before surgery aligns the teeth within each jaw so they fit correctly once the jaws are repositioned, with a shorter phase afterward to finish. Some cases need less; this is assessed individually.
How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?
